Cooking a three course dinner in a dishwasher

At BesteProduct.nl we absolutely love reviewing. You will find us testing camera’s, mobile phones, televisions and a lot more appliances and awesome gadgets. We can’t help but wonder if we can use all these devices for something other than what the manual instructs. For example can we use a dishwasher to prepare a complete 3 course dinner? Rene Klein, chef at restaurant Ruimzicht in Doetinchem, faced this challenge. Press start! 

For this experiment we brought a dishwasher in to restaurant Ruimzicht. It took chef Rene 3 days of testing before he was up for the challenge, serving a dinner from a dishwasher in front of our camera’s and the critical jury.

Temperature extremely important
“The temperature and the cooking time are extremely important", says Rene Klein. "A normal consumer dishwasher can get up to a temperature of 65 degrees. The problem is that the temperature varies during each washing program so it is important to use ingredients that cook quickly."
And that is exactly why de chef has chosen a plaice for starters and a thin rabbit filet for the main course. René: "In a dishwasher there will always be traces of chemicals and you don’t want t have them in your food. Besides a lot of water is being used and if you cook endive in fifteen liters of water the taste will be all washed out. “ 

Do you want to prepare a meal using a dishwasher? Here's the recipe made by chef René Klein.

A few extra tips from the chef: 

  • The preparation in the dishwasher varies. We used this Samsung dishwasher. Look for the temperatures in your instruction manual.
  • Preferably prepare your dinner on a temperature of 65 degrees Celcius.
  • The complete dinner has been prepared with a 80 minute program.
  • All the meals have been cooked in the dishwasher simultaneously.
  • After 20 minutes take the tomatoes out and put them in the ice water.
  • The plaice needs 35 minutes before being put it in the ice water.
  • Cook the potatoes short in boiling water, because they will be undercooked when you use the dishwasher.
  • The red cabbage needs to be taken out after the first washing cycle. Let them cool down.
  • The other ingredients can be left in the dishwasher until the end of the washing cycle.
  • Evacuation of the bags is the best. If not, remove as much air as possible. Aluminum foil is an alternative. But make sure it's tightly closed.
